Vision of the NAR

The National Association of Realtors, or the NAR, endeavors to be the collective force influencing the real estate industry. It seeks to be the leading advocate of the right to own, use and transfer real estate property; the leader in developing standards for ethical, efficient, and effective real estate business practices; and valued by real estate professionals and viewed by them as crucial to their success.

History of the NAR

Founded in 1908 in Chicago , the NAR aimed to unite real estate dealers for the purpose of exerting a greater influence on real estate matters. The Code of Ethics was adopted by the organization in 1913, with the Golden Rule as its theme. Today, the NAR has over 850,000 members, 54 State Associations (including Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico ) and more than 1,500 local Associations.

Benefits of being a member of the National Association of Realtors

The NAR receives $64 of the yearly dues paid by members. The state and local associations also receive a portion of each member’s yearly dues. As a result of these dues, the NAR has:

  • Realtor VIP Member Benefits Program: Members receive discounts on books, CD-ROM study packages, self study courses, and Spanish versions of many publications.

  • Annual Meetings: Annual national meetings are held every November, and feature information sessions on industry trends and practical business topics as well as hands-on training. A legislative meetings and trade expo is held every May, where members can discuss their concerns and goals for the organization and for lobbying on Capitol Hill.
  • Code of Ethics: The Code of Ethics provides a standard for all realtors to live up to.
  • Consumer Awareness: The ongoing public awareness campaign resulted in an increase in consumer perception of the value realtors have in the real estate process.
  • Information and Technology: Members can list their homes on www.realtor.com, the world’s largest database of homes for sale. Members also have access to an online library, and can request a customized search and order publications.

Research and the National Association of Realtors

Research is collected by the NAR on a variety of topics that are important to realtors, such as existing home sales, economic and housing data, industry and consumer surveys, public policy analysis and tracking, and local market forecasts and analysis. Some of this research can be indicative of the overall health of the industry, such as the data that tracks how many houses are sold, what types of neighborhoods they are located in, and what amount they sold for.
